The American Criminal Justice system can be impartially described as racially biased, politically motivated, financially unsustainable, and socially ineffective. Can building a better criminal justice system start from smaller and more localized interventions? Join the conversation on the potential ways that communities can and are moving the needle on this important and overdue issue.

Register For Leadership Logic

Leadership Learning in the Outdoors for Group and Individual Change, better known as Leadership LOGIC, is a two-day overnight leadership development program at no cost to students. LOGIC caters to FSU students who have not participated in a leadership development program before. It is a great way to explore leadership knowledge and skills through individual, small group and large group interactions.

In partnership with Campus Recreation, the overnight program is held at the Rez and makes use of the FSU Challenge Course. Students stay overnight in the cabins on site, all of which are equipped with air conditioning and multiple bathrooms.

LOGIC spring program dates:

LeaderShape® at Florida State University hosts a session of the Institute which challenges participants to lead with integrity while working toward a vision grounded in their deepest values. Participants explore not only what they want to do, but also who they want to be. During the week, participants will have an opportunity to meet and work with more than 130 students from diverse backgrounds, as well as create a personal vision—an individual commitment to creating a positive change in the world.

The 2018 application is due by Feb. 25 at 11:59 p.m.

Those who have questions about the program or application are invited to attend one of two short, optional information sessions:  

  • Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in DSC 2201/2202

Social Justice Ally Training

The mission of the Social Justice Ally Training program is to educate members of the Florida State community about issues related to social justice in order to develop allies who will promote an equitable and inclusive environment and serve as social change agents in a diverse and global society.

Individuals who register must be able to attend both days of a Social Justice Ally Training session. Registration is required for all training. In order to provide the highest quality training, registration is limited to 15 people.

Sessions will be held:

  • Feb. 19, 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • Feb. 22 & 27, 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Did you love your experience with Social Justice Ally Training? Would you like to share it with others? Then become an SJAT facilitator by participating in one of two training sessions scheduled for the spring semester.

Sessions will be held:

  • March 1, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. at GME 2400

diversity & Inclusion certificate

Florida State Diversity and Inclusion Certificate

The certificate creates an opportunity for faculty and staff to explore strategic areas around diversity and to learn more about the ways in which they can assist in creating a welcoming and inclusive campus for all. Upon completing all 6 classes and the required Theory to Action Project, submit the completion form to training@fsu.edu. By completing all the courses within the series, a participant can earn a Diversity & Inclusion Certificate of Completion.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

The Community Outreach Program gives students the opportunity to get involved in community service on a regular basis, with projects to choose from almost daily. Projects are student-led and are offered at a variety of nonprofit agencies.  Students can sign up for projects as early as one week in advance and up to the day of the project. Space is limited so signing up early is strongly encouraged. Transportation is provided for all projects.

Volunteer with February Fresh Market

Seminole Dining will be hosting a February Fresh Market on Feb. 28 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. as part of the Fresh Market series that will be held each month on the Union Green. Volunteers are needed to get people interested and guide people towards the market, help people check out, conduct surveys, and pass out flyers. Volunteer shifts are one hour long, although volunteers may work multiple shifts.  The Market will consist of fresh fruits and veggies and seasonally available local produce. There will be a Chef Demo with samples of a fresh local item, a fruit cutting station, a Social Media contest for discounts, and a bring your own bag discount.

NCBI @ FSU offers workshops for participants to reflect on how we think and act as members of identity groups and provides skills for bridging our differences. The workshop consists of a series of incremental activities that helps participants to:

  • Celebrate their similarities and differences.
  • Recognize the misinformation they have learned about various groups, including their own.
  • Learn about and re-evaluate personal attitudes and behaviors that are based on the impact of prejudice and discrimination.
  • Claim pride in their various identities.
  • Understand the personal impact of discrimination through the telling of stories.
  • Learn hands-on tools for dealing effectively with offensive remarks and behaviors.

SGA is hosting an 8-hour NCBI student workshop on 2/17. If you are interested in an engaging session on bias awareness and prejudice reduction join us!

The College of Business is Diversity in Leadership Day on Thursday, Feb. 22. The event is a one-day forum with a joint focus on leadership, diversity, and inclusion within the business environment.  The purpose is to give students the opportunity to explore the complex issues surrounding diversity in today’s world.  All FSU students are welcome to attend.  The schedule includes lunch with select students followed by the featured panel discussion in Starry Conference Room (214 RBB).  The discussion is designed to highlight the leadership, personal and professional development skills essential to becoming a successful leader.

DORI SAVES LIVES: day at the capitol

Day at the Capital 2018

Day at the Capitol - The Dori Saves Lives Foundation and the GEICO Philanthropic Foundation work together at the Day at the Capitol with law enforcement, government and state officials, and victims' families to educate and increase awareness of road safety. Teens from all over Florida have the opportunity to attend a safe teen driving summit where they will gain knowledge and develop skills to minimize the driving behaviors that cause them significant risk. The event is concluded with a press conference on the steps of the Capitol. Government and state officials, victims' families, and advocates for roadway safety address the public with issues, concerns, and solutions. Media outlets from all over Florida will be in attendance covering this crucial safety summit.

 

Volunteers will be attending and promoting roadway safety from 11-12:30, meeting at Dori Saves Lives at 11. They will also have the option to tour the Capitol after the event's conclusion, receive lunch and service hours.

 

DOC SEEK VOLUNTEERS FOR NEW MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM

The Florida Department of Corrections seeks volunteers to conduct group activities in new specialized outpatient mental health units at Wakulla Correctional Institution. It’s a unique program that will provide augmented treatment for patients who have struggled to adjust in the general prison environment due to issues related to their mental illness.  Part of this augmented treatment will be providing an array of out-of-cell activities to improve socialization and engagement. We have been working to secure staff and volunteers for many of the activities listed below and some listed activities are just ideas for potential groups. The groups do not need to be limited to these alone. If someone has an interest or expertise in another area, please do not hesitate to inquire.

Planned group activities include:

  • Music Therapy, including classes in guitar, ukulele, music appreciation, band, and choral club
  • Art Therapy

Volunteers will be working closely with security and our mental health team to provide a better treatment environment for some of our most vulnerable patients. We want to make improvements to meet their specific needs and we need some help to do it.

American Cancer Society Seeks Event/Office Volunteers

The American Cancer Society seeks volunteer office and event support to provide clerical and reception support for office. Responsibilities include greeting visitors, performing filing as requested, making address/file labels, stuffing envelopes, sorting mail, making copies, and answering phones. Event prep work for community events includes stuffing bags, counting inventory, and assembling event kits.
