Apply to Service Scholars

Students who have successfully transferred to Florida State University and current students in good academic standing with a distinguished record of community involvement now have an opportunity to enter the Service Scholar Program as rising juniors. Competitive candidates will be able to demonstrate a history of community involvement that meets or exceeds 150 service hours. Completed applications, which will include two letters of recommendation and service hour documentation, must be submitted by Friday, March 23 at 5 p.m. Eastern time. Incomplete and/or late applications will not be considered.

Become a Community Ambassador

The Community Ambassador Program seeks qualified and motivated students to serve with community organizations to help bring resources to the local community. Benefits include: recognition on official transcripts, leadership experience, a stipend, and service hours. The deadline to apply is March 9.

Did you love your experience with Social Justice Ally Training? Would you like to share it with others? Then become an SJAT facilitator by participating in one of two training sessions scheduled for the spring semester.

Sessions will be held:

• Apr. 18, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. at GME 3500

diversity & Inclusion certificate

The certificate creates an opportunity for faculty and staff to explore strategic areas around diversity and to learn more about the ways in which they can assist in creating a welcoming and inclusive campus for all. Upon completing all 6 classes and the required Theory to Action Project, submit the completion form to training@fsu.edu. By completing all the courses within the series, a participant can earn a Diversity & Inclusion Certificate of Completion.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

The Community Outreach Program gives students the opportunity to get involved in community service on a regular basis, with projects to choose from almost daily. Projects are student-led and are offered at a variety of nonprofit agencies.  Students can sign up for projects as early as one week in advance and up to the day of the project. Space is limited so signing up early is strongly encouraged. Transportation is provided for all projects.

Alternative spring break at Lake Seminole

Join the FSU Environmental Service Program for their alternative spring break program! They will be volunteering and camping at Lake Seminole with Army Corps. Work could include trail maintenance, building bat boxes, along with many other activities! ESP will be staying at the group campsite, which does include a bathroom and electricity. The program runs from Sunday, March 11 at 3 p.m. - Friday, March 16 at 3 p.m. Volunteers do not need to stay the whole time and may come when they would like to.

Volunteer with Food Recovery Network

Ever wonder where surplus food on campus goes at the end of the day? The Food Recovery Network at FSU recovers it and donates it to individuals experiencing food insecurity! Help keep food from going in the landfill and support our community. Sign up for a recovery here or email gam14@my.fsu.edu to learn more. Meetings are also held every other Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Mendenhall A, Room 101. The next meeting is Tuesday, March 13.

GREEN dot training

FSU Green Dot Bystander Trainings empower students to discover ways to be active bystanders and create a community that does not tolerate violence. Join us for a fun and interactive day of learning how we can be reactive and proactive in ending power based personal violence in our community. Lunch and other prizes will be provided.

Community Opportunities

Mission San Luis seeks volunteers for special event

Mission San Luis is a non-profit interpretive museum located at the site of the the western Apalachee Native American and Spanish colonial capital of Florida from 1656 to 1704. With a goal to inspire a love for nature, history, and other cultures in visitors, the museum brings the 17th century to life through costumed interpreters, reconstructed buildings, museum exhibits and archaeological demonstrations.

On Saturday March 10, Mission San Luis will be host Spanish Colonial Adventure Day. This event will mirror the Winter Solstice Native American celebration, but with an emphasis on the preparations for the 1686 exploratory expedition to Pensacola Bay. The museum seeks of volunteers to help achieve the level of effectiveness and efficiency it strives for in all special events. The shift choices are 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., 1 p.m. – 5 p.m., and 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Volunteer with WFSU

WFSU seeks student volunteers to man phones for the WFSU-FM Spring Membership Drive on March 23-30. WFSU radio has been a local fixture for over 50 years. WFSU Public Media’s radio stations include two news and information-based stations and one 24-hours classical music station. The spring pledge drive provides much needed revenue to keep these stations and our programs on the air. Volunteers will receive a brief tutorial of our phone and computer systems before processing over-the-phone pledges. Staff will be present to answer any questions volunteers may run across. DOC SEEK VOLUNTEERS FOR NEW MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM

The Florida Department of Corrections seeks volunteers to conduct group activities in new specialized outpatient mental health units at Wakulla Correctional Institution. It’s a unique program that will provide augmented treatment for patients who have struggled to adjust in the general prison environment due to issues related to their mental illness.  Part of this augmented treatment will be providing an array of out-of-cell activities to improve socialization and engagement. We have been working to secure staff and volunteers for many of the activities listed below and some listed activities are just ideas for potential groups. The groups do not need to be limited to these alone. If someone has an interest or expertise in another area, please do not hesitate to inquire.

American Cancer Society Seeks Event/Office Volunteers

The American Cancer Society seeks volunteer office and event support to provide clerical and reception support for office. Responsibilities include greeting visitors, performing filing as requested, making address/file labels, stuffing envelopes, sorting mail, making copies, and answering phones. Event prep work for community events includes stuffing bags, counting inventory, and assembling event kits.
