Florida State will soon give the campus and surrounding community the opportunity to do just that with the launch of a new affiliate of the National Coalition Building Institute. The new campus affiliate for this international nonprofit will facilitate workshops on prejudice reduction and inclusion to students, faculty and staff.

LeaderShape® at Florida State University is gearing up for its annual Institute, a week-long program that gives participants a chance to work with peers and faculty to enhance their leadership abilities, explore their strengths and values, and create positive change in their communities.

“Can race melt?”

Marc Johnston-Guerrero tackled this question in his keynote address at Saturday’s Multicultural Leadership Summit, hosted by the Center for Leadership & Social Change.

The annual two-day conference—this year with a theme of “Dumping the Melting Pot: Embracing the Mosaic”— explored the concept of cultural assimilation in the United States and offered 140 students the chance to discuss topics related to power, privilege and oppression in open workshops and small group settings.

“How can white people feel marginalized, feel like a minority in the societies they once defined?”

It's a question Justin Gest explored with an audience at Florida State University on Tuesday, as he presented findings from his book, The New Minority: White Working Class Politics in an Age of Immigration and Inequality. Gest, an assistant professor of Public Policy at George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government, has completed a groundbreaking academic study of Brexit and Trump supporters that provides context to the largely unprecedented shifts of white working-class voters in British and American politics.
