Facilitators

While FSU faculty and staff, as well as Tallahassee community leaders, have worked to propose workshops related to at least one of the topical areas, the planning team has worked to develop a complementary 45-minute small group curriculum designed to draw connections between topical areas, leave students with a reinvigorated sense of duty and a call to support community-led change initiatives, and find meaning in social movement solidarity. NOTE: Due to the nature of participant attendance expectations the small group curriculum is not cumulative in nature (either within a weekend or across weekends).

Additional Information

  • Small group discussions will occur immediately following each concurrent workshop block during the Symposium.
  • Each small group will have two facilitators. Facilitators will be paired 1 undergraduate student with 1 faculty/staff/graduate student.
  • Time blocks will be Fridays (January 22 & 29, February 5) 7:30PM-8:15PM, and Saturdays (January 23 & 30, February 6) 10:30AM-11:15AM and 12:15AM-1:00PM.
  • Facilitators will be asked to participate in a 30-minute daily debrief, immediately following the final small group session of each day of the Symposium (this is only expected for facilitators who have facilitated that day).
  • Facilitator commitment must be at least 1 weekend (consisting of 3 small group sessions - times above).
  • A virtual facilitator training will be hosted from 5:00PM-7:00PM each Thursday before the Symposium (January 21 & 28, and February 4, 2021). Facilitators are expected to attend at least one training before facilitating.

Application Overview

Within the application, individuals will have the ability to rank which weekend(s) they are able to and would prefer to serve as a small group facilitator. Additionally, applicants will be asked to respond (concisely, yet completely) to two prompts:

  1. Do you have any previous experience facilitating small group discussion and/or reflection? If yes, please explain. Please also specifically indicate if previous experience includes the Multicultural Leadership Summit or the Service Leadership Seminar.
  2. The Social Change Symposium considers having a diverse community as a key element to the learning experience. Diversity presents itself in many different forms, such as: socioeconomic status, race or ethnicity, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, nationality or place of origin, disability, unique work or life experience, etc. We invite you to use this space to tell us how you may contribute to the diversification of the Symposium community.

Questions regarding Symposium planning, including small group facilitation, can be directed to program coordinator David Bateman-Schieler at dschieler@fsu.edu.
