Racial segregation of public schools is alive and well in Florida and around the country. Leon County, where FSU is located, features one of the most highly segregated k-12 school systems in the state. Professor Weissert will discuss the implications of this trend and other issues flowing from a recent report issued by the LeRoy Collins Institute titled Patterns of Resegregation in Florida Schools.

Join us on Friday, April 20, to say farewell to the 2018 Moellership cohort before they begin their summer service experiences. Moellership students volunteer at community organizations both locally and abroad for 8-12 weeks, working in partnership with local leadership to create change in specific social issue areas.

This year's social issues include women's refugee settlement, wildlife conservation, indigenous resource development, legal assistance for veterans, first generation college access, arts development, and gender-based health education in locations such as Guatemala, Costa Rica, Kenya, Honduras, Greece, and Tallahassee.

Please come by to learn about students' projects and enjoy light refreshments!

 

SOCIAL JUSTICE LIVING-LEARNING COMMUNITY

The Social Justice Living-Learning Community is located in Wildwood Hall. The SJLLC is designed for students of all majors who desire to engage in meaningful, intentional, and open discussion on many societal issues. SJLLC, colloquially known as SoJust, is made up of approximately 30 students who participate in this supportive, inclusive community. "SoJusters" will engage in discussions meant to challenge existing beliefs and opinions by participating in discussions with a diverse group of students. The community is meant for students who seek to engage in open and progressive discussions on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, class, religion, ability, citizenship, political ideology, and other identities.

Leadership LOGIC

Leadership Learning in the Outdoors for Group and Individual Change, better known as Leadership LOGIC, is a two-day overnight leadership development program at no cost to students. Specifically, LOGIC caters to FSU students who have not participated in a leadership development program before. It is a great way to explore leadership knowledge and skills through individual, small group and large group interactions. In partnership with Campus Recreation, the overnight program is held at the Rez and makes use of the FSU Challenge Course. Students stay overnight in the cabins on site, all of which are equipped with air conditioning and multiple bathrooms.

The final session of Leadership LOGIC takes place April 13-14.

Applications are now open for student facilitators and co-coordinators for next year's LOGIC program, from August 2018 through April 2019. Student facilitators and coordinators are crucial in collaborating with Rez and center staff to construct curriculum, plan the programs, and create a meaningful experience for participants. We are looking for a diverse group of students who can contribute different skills to an enriching learning environment. Applicants should be responsible, self-motivated, organized and conscientious, self-directed, committed, and passionate about the development of others.

Applications are due April 9 by 11:59 p.m. and will take some time to complete. Please note the application must be completed in its entirety, and the form will not save your answers for later editing.

Florida State Diversity and Inclusion Certificate

The certificate creates an opportunity for faculty and staff to explore strategic areas around diversity and to learn more about the ways in which they can assist in creating a welcoming and inclusive campus for all. Upon completing all 6 classes and the required Theory to Action Project, submit the completion form to training@fsu.edu. By completing all the courses within the series, a participant can earn a Diversity & Inclusion Certificate of Completion.

Service Leadership Seminar

The Service Leadership Seminar is a unique experience for incoming freshman at Florida State University. The weeklong event is held before the start of fall semester at no cost for students and provides an opportunity to learn about community service, identity and leadership.  During the week, students participate in community service projects, workshops, speakers and interaction with current campus leaders. The activities are designed to enable the participants to discover how they can help create positive, sustainable change on Florida State’s campus and beyond.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

The Community Outreach Program gives students the opportunity to get involved in community service on a regular basis, with projects to choose from almost daily. Projects are student-led and are offered at a variety of nonprofit agencies.  Students can sign up for projects as early as one week in advance and up to the day of the project. Space is limited so signing up early is strongly encouraged. Transportation is provided for all projects.

Spiritual Life Project fight, flight and freeze response: Improving your relationships by knowing the signs

Topic: Learn about the physiological response our bodies have to stress and tension and how these responses impact us. This short educational discussion is a great way to prepare everyone for the experiential learning of stress relief.

Presenter: Robin Dunn Bryant has a BA in English from Purdue University and an MFA in Creative Writing (Poetry) from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is a member of the second graduating class of Cave Canem, a writer's center with a focus on African American poets and writers. She is a certified yoga teacher, has a Reiki level 2 attunement and is a Certified TRE Provider. She owns Whole Self Wellness, a somatic healing center that teaches overwhelmed women simple to implement solutions to combat their stress, tension and trauma.

Registration is currently open for its spring training session. Sessions are open to faulty, staff and students, with at least 15 seats in each session reserved for student participants.

Volunteer with Grace Mission Summer Academy

Grace Mission in Tallahassee seeks volunteers for their Summer Reading Academy at the Episcopal University Center at FSU from June 11 to June 15. The Academy will run from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. This program is for rising 1st - 5th graders, and it provides a fun way for the kids to brush up on their reading skills in preparation for going back to school in August. This year's theme is Secrets of the Forest, and the focus will be the botanical and wildlife species in the Apalachicola Forest and the Native American people who lived here. Volunteers are expected to help with presentations, labs, games or arts and crafts. Volunteers also have the opportunity to aid in the organization of a Friday field trip. DOC SEEK VOLUNTEERS FOR NEW MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM

The Florida Department of Corrections seeks volunteers to conduct group activities in new specialized outpatient mental health units at Wakulla Correctional Institution. It’s a unique program that will provide augmented treatment for patients who have struggled to adjust in the general prison environment due to issues related to their mental illness.  Part of this augmented treatment will be providing an array of out-of-cell activities to improve socialization and engagement. We have been working to secure staff and volunteers for many of the activities listed below and some listed activities are just ideas for potential groups. The groups do not need to be limited to these alone. If someone has an interest or expertise in another area, please do not hesitate to inquire.

The American Cancer Society seeks volunteer office and event support to provide clerical and reception support for office. Responsibilities include greeting visitors, performing filing as requested, making address/file labels, stuffing envelopes, sorting mail, making copies, and answering phones. Common Tides Internship

Common Tides seeks interns for a sailing expedition to the US Virgin Islands where students will be able to teach, learn and instruct others on marine science, and travel. The internship lasts from July 10 to August 5. Interns will have the opportunity to learning basic sailing skills, help with hurricane relief efforts, instruct and lead student snorkel groups, and provide a free marine science program to local students. There is a fee for the participants that covers food, stay on the sail boat, and training. Common Tides, a 501(c)(3) is a non profit dedicated to providing free marine science and sailing programs to underserved local children of the islands.
