FSU's Great Give, a 36-hour fundraising event, kicks off Thursday morning at 9 a.m. Consider donating to the national award-winning Women’s Leadership Institute sponsored by Women4FSU and the Center For Leadership & Social Change. WLI develops, encourages, and celebrates diverse FSU undergraduate female students by providing leadership experience, education, and reflection. All gifts will be matched up to $5,000 thanks to a challenge grant from the Women for FSU Executive Committee and the former Gift of Wisdom award recipients.

The deaths of students and teachers from mass homicide in schools are now a central concern of American citizens and leaders who are calling for effective social policy responses. What does research say about these perpetrators and events, and what we know about "what works" and "what might work" when responding to these realities? The spectre of "unintended consequences" of bold policies will also be considered. This discussion will assist us in reaching important moral, ethical, legal, and social policy decisions that have life-and-death consequences.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxFSU, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxFSU event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

Not registered, but interested in the amazing ideas our speakers will share? In the event of no-shows, walk up registration will be allowed after noon.

Applications are now open for Social Change Peer Educators! If you are an undergraduate student interested in facilitation, leadership learning, promoting diversity & inclusion or encouraging awareness of social issues on campus, then consider applying to be a Social Change Peer Educator!

Peer educators facilitate workshops for campus organizations, departments, units, and community members on the outcomes of diversity, leadership, and service. Students with previous participation or experience with a leadership, diversity, or service-based program and a familiarity with on-going social issues and social justice trends are preferred. Applications are due by March 28.

Service Scholars: Rising Junior committed to service? Apply.

Students who have successfully transferred to Florida State University and current students in good academic standing with a distinguished record of community involvement now have an opportunity to enter the Service Scholar Program as rising juniors. Competitive candidates will be able to demonstrate a history of community involvement that meets or exceeds 150 service hours. Completed applications, which will include two letters of recommendation and service hour documentation, must be submitted by Friday, March 23 at 5 p.m. Eastern time. Incomplete and/or late applications will not be considered.

The certificate creates an opportunity for faculty and staff to explore strategic areas around diversity and to learn more about the ways in which they can assist in creating a welcoming and inclusive campus for all. Upon completing all 6 classes and the required Theory to Action Project, submit the completion form to training@fsu.edu. By completing all the courses within the series, a participant can earn a Diversity & Inclusion Certificate of Completion.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

The Community Outreach Program gives students the opportunity to get involved in community service on a regular basis, with projects to choose from almost daily. Projects are student-led and are offered at a variety of nonprofit agencies.  Students can sign up for projects as early as one week in advance and up to the day of the project. Space is limited so signing up early is strongly encouraged. Transportation is provided for all projects.

Join SLP on Tuesday as Dr. Mike Nair-Collins from FSU College of Medicine facilitates a discussion titled "Love, Anger, & Injustice." In this session we will explore love and anger as they relate to injustice and movements for social justice. We will consider how love and anger relate to each other, how they differ, and whether they share some deeper commonality. Finally, we will explore love and anger as they relate to authenticity and the construction of meaning in a deeply unjust world.

“Vagina Monologues”

The WSU presents its annual production of Eve Ensler’s groundbreaking play, “The Vagina Monologues,” based on hundreds of interviews with women of varying race, ethnicity, social class and sexual orientation. The play hopes to provide audiences with an insight on what it means to identify as a woman.

Attend

Seminole Dining and the Student Dietetic Association will be hosting a March Fresh Market on March 28 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Landis Green. The Market will consist of fresh fruits and veggies and seasonally available local produce. There will be a Chef Demo with samples of a fresh local item, a fruit cutting station, a Social Media contest for discounts, and a bring your own bag discount.

Volunteer

The Fresh Market seeks volunteers to garner interest and guide people towards the market, help with check out, conduct surveys, and pass out flyers. Volunteer shifts are one hour long, although volunteers may work multiple shifts.

Mission San Luis seeks volunteers for special event

Mission San Luis is a non-profit interpretive museum located at the site of the the western Apalachee Native American and Spanish colonial capital of Florida from 1656 to 1704. With a goal to inspire a love for nature, history, and other cultures in visitors, the museum brings the 17th century to life through costumed interpreters, reconstructed buildings, museum exhibits and archaeological demonstrations.

On Saturday March 10, Mission San Luis will be host Spanish Colonial Adventure Day. This event will mirror the Winter Solstice Native American celebration, but with an emphasis on the preparations for the 1686 exploratory expedition to Pensacola Bay. The museum seeks of volunteers to help achieve the level of effectiveness and efficiency it strives for in all special events. The shift choices are 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., 1 p.m. – 5 p.m., and 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.

WFSU seeks student volunteers to man phones for the WFSU-FM Spring Membership Drive on March 23-30. WFSU radio has been a local fixture for over 50 years. WFSU Public Media’s radio stations include two news and information-based stations and one 24-hours classical music station. The spring pledge drive provides much needed revenue to keep these stations and our programs on the air. Volunteers will receive a brief tutorial of our phone and computer systems before processing over-the-phone pledges. Staff will be present to answer any questions volunteers may run across. DOC SEEK VOLUNTEERS FOR NEW MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM

The Florida Department of Corrections seeks volunteers to conduct group activities in new specialized outpatient mental health units at Wakulla Correctional Institution. It’s a unique program that will provide augmented treatment for patients who have struggled to adjust in the general prison environment due to issues related to their mental illness.  Part of this augmented treatment will be providing an array of out-of-cell activities to improve socialization and engagement. We have been working to secure staff and volunteers for many of the activities listed below and some listed activities are just ideas for potential groups. The groups do not need to be limited to these alone. If someone has an interest or expertise in another area, please do not hesitate to inquire.

Planned group activities include:

Careers in Community Organizing for Social Justice

The Direct Action & Research Training (DART) Center will hold an online information session on Tuesday, April 3 at 7 p.m. to discuss careers in community organizing with FSU students and alumni interested in uniting congregations and working for social, economic and racial justice.

DART hires and trains organizers to build organizations that have successfully addressed issues including:

* Plugging the school-to-prison pipeline
* Reining in predatory lending practices
* Expanding access to primary health and dental care
* Prioritizing funding for affordable housing and job training
* Improving low-performing public schools
* Fighting for immigrants' rights

Positions start August 13, 2018 in Knoxville, TN, Charleston, SC, Lexington, KY, Louisville, KY, Lawrence, KS, and St. Petersburg, Tampa, West Palm Beach, Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Starting salary $34,000/year + benefits. Although it may be helpful, no prior organizing experience is necessary. Fluent Spanish speakers are encouraged to apply.
